particular show said that as they grew up in the 1950s and 60s, they had to have better grades in school and work harder on the job just to be considered equal to their Caucasian peers at that time. No matter how hard they tried and how much they excelled, at the end of the day, they were still given the impression that they didn’t measure up.

Unfortunately, that type of mentality is in the church today as it pertains to women in ministry. Gender discrimination in the house of God can cause women to become angry. I have encountered this time and time again in various churches from leaders who only want to hear you sing, M.C. a program, read the announcements, or act. They don’t think you are capable or chosen to deliver the Word of the Lord because, after all, you are a woman. Remain faithful to the Word.

Everyone is not called to the pulpit. Your platform may be in the prisons, nursing homes or streets. Don’t let gender discrimination stop you. Seek the Lord for wisdom. Walk uprightly and let Him bring to fruition what He has called and chosen you to be. The plan of the enemy is to divert your energy from pursuing your destiny, to spinning your wheels trying to prove yourself on everything.

Let’s look at this for a moment. Have you found yourself saying any of these things to yourself?
  • If I pray more, maybe they will accept me…
  • If I memorize more Scriptures …
  • If I clean the church…
  • If I’m extra nice to everyone…
  • If I take on everyone else’s unwanted tasks in addition to my own duties…

If you are not careful, you will begin to get into competition with those that are discriminating against you, and all of a sudden, your destiny has just gone in a direction different from what the Lord has planned for your life.

Competition will make you think you have to do everything better, quicker, stronger, and with more precision than the next person. The underlying motivator is still gender discrimination—it is driving many women of God to various extremes in an attempt to prove that they are worthy. Watch out for this trap.

There is also “subtle” gender discrimination. You might ask, What is that? Subtle gender discrimination is underhanded, behind the scenes and lurking around.

There are men and women in ministry who are secretly and quietly trying to undermine your ministry. For example, they may suggest you do something in ministry that is totally in the opposite direction of where the Lord is calling you. So what do you do? Set your face on destiny and go in that direction. How can you tell when there is subtle gender discrimination? One example is being given directions to do things—that are good things—but you know they are not God’s will for your life. Another example is being asked to fill positions in the church (because someone has to do it and you are the best candidate) that put your destiny on hold.

Let’s consider the power of suggestion. Think about how much money is paid for a 30-second ad during the Super Bowl. If images and words were not so powerful, then companies would not pay millions of dollars for one ad. It works the same way with subtle discrimination. People will suggest things to you (all the while, they know exactly what they are doing). The idea is to plant a seed so that when it’s time for you to walk in your destiny, that seed will be there to try and stop you from moving forward. Whatever you do, please don’t let gender discrimination cause you to be another angry woman in the pulpit. Strive to walk in forgiveness, peace and love, and you will walk in the destiny that the Lord has predestined for you life.

To the five-fold leaders, particularly the male leaders—did you know that your spiritual daughters get their confirmation/identity from you?…just like your natural daughters. If that confirmation is not there; if you are not sending and releasing them into their call for whatever reasons, some of them may not get to where the Lord has called them because they are waiting on the father to say go. Fathers in the Lord, if you are not pushing your daughters forward, you will have to give an account for not doing so.

God sent His Son into the earth to redeem man. He didn’t use an angel to send His Son. He didn’t use the elders to send His Son. He did it Himself and it is time for all leaders to step up to the plate and begin to send their sons and daughters forth at the appointed time and not let other people do it. We do a great disservice to our spiritual children when we raise them but neglect to send them. Let’s take our lead from God and do what He did. When we individually stand before the Lord and give an account of how we handled God’s people, we will not be able to hide behind denominations and their rules as to why we did not obey God.

Women of God, I leave you with these words: Press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.*  (* Philippians 3:14)  Stay on course. Don’t let gender discrimination cause you to be another angry woman in the pulpit.

Gender Discrimination

It’s unfortunate, but true, that women are discriminated against in churches. Some men and women feel that a woman should not preach the gospel. I have spoken to men and women who share this point of view. Many preachers have used the
Word of God to “keep women in their place.”  My sisters, don’t allow gender discrimination in the church to make you bitter and angry. That is another trick and trap of the enemy to get your focus off what the Lord has chosen you to do. Ask the Lord to help you to walk in wisdom and in love.

I was watching a television show about racism in America. Some of the guests on this
